North Washington Implement
North Washington Implement is Washington State's oldest John Deere dealership and has been serving Washington State since 1916. In October of 1998, Jim Hale, owner of North Washington, moved the company to 830 Evergreen Street, Lynden and built a new building on a 4.5 acre lot. Several features of the construction, such as river rock, fir cabinetry and local cedar logs, lend a distinctive northwest flair. Of course, the trademark deer--make that John Deere--tracks lead through the front door of this spacious 32,000 square-foot building. Here at North Washington Implement, we are committed to the future of agriculture and are here to help our customers get what they need.
North Washington Implement employee and JDU student, Tim Zylstra, "I’m never bored during my internship at the dealership.” Caleb Farley and Tim Zylstra know it’s their on-the-job training at dealerships that will take them where they want to go. “The classroom work is important,” says Zylstra. “But I can get burned out on it. I’m never bored during my internship at the dealership. It’s where you find out what the life of a service technician is really like. It’s where I get to apply what I’ve learned.” Both Farley and Zylstra are students at the John Deere TECH Program at Walla Walla Community College in Walla Walla, WA. Zylstra works at North Washington Implement in Lynden, WA. Farley works at Fisher Implement in Hillsboro, OR. Farley says the internship is critical to his future career. “Ever since I was a little kid, I liked tearing into stuff and putting it back together. Being a service technician gives me a chance to do what I love. And I didn’t realize how complicated the equipment was until I got into the TECH Program. I love having the skills and confidence to work on whatever comes into the dealership.” Zylstra enjoys the challenges too. “During my internship, sometimes I got put on projects that I had a hard time figuring out. But that’s when I learned the most. By the end, I knew those tractors inside and out, and how to make them work.” Del Wilde, instructor and program coordinator at Walla Walla, says the internship—or co-op training—is one of the most important aspects of the TECH Program. “Students apply what they've learned in the co-op program,” Wilde says. “It serves as another type of classroom, one where their work affects real customers. During the co-op, the TECH student works 480 hours. They do three co-ops before graduation. That means more than 1,000 hours of on-the-job, hands-on training in a dealership. No other program offers that experience.” The John Deere TECH Program at Walla Walla draws from 13 states. The instructors work closely with their Dealer Advisory Board to be sure the students are getting the best education. Dealers provide the Walla Walla instructors with a detailed list of what they want their sponsored student to learn. Then the instructors customize the TECH Program for that student. “It doesn't do us any good to be training someone on grain combines if he is going to work in an orchard area and won't see one,” says Wilde.
